Hatcher Pass Summit

Palmer

The feel

The summit sits at 3,886 feet inside Summit Lake State Recreation Site, beside a small tarn 20 feet deep that a long-gone alpine glacier left behind. A trail circles the lake and climbs to a bluff with views of the Willow Creek Valley, the Susitna Valley and the western arc of the Alaska Range.

Paragliders soar around the nearby peaks on most summer weekends, and blueberries can be found throughout the area in August.

What to expect

What it is
A 360-acre state recreation site at the top of Hatcher Pass Road, with a cirque lake, a viewpoint bluff and the start of the April Bowl Trail.
Crowds and best time
Paragliders launch on most summer weekends.
Parking
Limited parking at mile 19.6 Hatcher Pass Road, about 2 miles past the Independence Mine turnoff.
Fees and passes
A $5 day-use fee or annual parking pass is required at most trailheads through the park.
Hazards
Snow can fall any month of the year at this elevation. The road from Mile 17.5 to Mile 32.5 is rough, gravel, narrow and steep, and RVs or large vehicles are not recommended. Hatcher Pass is an avalanche hazard area.
Season and access
Road access is limited to summer, usually July through late September. In winter the area is used mainly by skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers.

Mingo says

Drive up between July and late September, when the road over the pass is open. Aim for August if you want blueberries. Weekends bring the paragliders.

Before you go

  • Leave the RV behind, since the road above Mile 17.5 is steep gravel with slow passage.
  • Check conditions with the park office at (907) 745-8950, because the site and the pass road close for the season.
  • The April Bowl Trail is 2.2 miles round trip with about 800 feet of gain, narrow and rough on the ridge to Hatch Peak.
