Mud Bay (Homer Spit)

The feel

Mud Bay sits at the base of the Homer Spit. You watch the flats for jumpers on an incoming tide, then cast for pinks and silvers off the gravel edge.

You reach the gravel below the bike path. Pink salmon run 3 to 5 lb and coho 6 to 12 lb, and Dolly Varden are in the water too. Crowds are medium.

Water and access

Gravel edge below the bike path, at the flats at the base of the Spit.

Species and timing

Pink (humpy) at 3 to 5 lb and coho (silver) at 6 to 12 lb in July and August. Dolly Varden also live here.

Methods and gear

Bank fishing with spin gear or bait.

Crowds and best time

Crowds are medium. Fish the high tide.

Parking

Park at the base of the Spit or at the Kachemak Drive beach access.

Hazards

The soft deep mud below the high-tide line is dangerous. Do not walk on it.

Restrooms are at Mariner Park.

July and August.
