Halibut Cove Lagoon East Cabin

Homer

The feel

This is a log cabin on a rock bluff over Halibut Cove Lagoon in Kachemak Bay State Park, at the south end of the lagoon about 10 miles from the Homer Spit. It sleeps 1 to 6, and a wood stove heats it.

You reach it by private boat, floatplane or commercial water taxi, then carry your gear 250 feet along a boardwalk from the public dock. Outside are a fire ring, an outdoor bench and a table with benches. Sea otters, seals, porpoises and whales share the water, and moose, black bears and mountain goats live on the land.

What to expect

Check-in and stay
Check-in and check-out time is 12:00 pm. Maximum stay is 7 nights.
Parking and rig size
Arrive by private boat, floatplane or commercial water taxi through the Halibut Cove Lagoon Public Dock, then carry gear 250 feet on the boardwalk.
Fees and reservations
$75/night plus a $4.50 reservation fee. Reserve online up to 90 days out.
Dogs
Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash because of bears and other hikers.
Hazards
Shoals can strand boats, so know the channel and account for tides and weather. Black bears live in the area.
Bathrooms and water
Bring a jug of water.
Season and access
Year-round. In winter the dock ramps are raised and access is by stairs on the beach; anyone using the dock needs a dinghy to reach the beach.

Mingo says

Book as far ahead as the 90 days allow. In winter plan for the beach stairs and a dinghy.
