Homer / Kachemak Bay (saltwater)

The feel

Charters and the boat launch are on the Homer Spit, and Kachemak Bay out of Homer is known for halibut, lingcod, rockfish and salmon. Crowds are high.

Southcentral summer temperatures typically range from about 40°F to 75°F, so be prepared for rain and bugs. Shore silver fishing is at the Nick Dudiak lagoon. Anglers jig, bait and troll for halibut at 15-100 lb, with lingcod at 8-30 lb and rockfish also in the mix.

Species and timing

Halibut from May to September at 15-100 lb. Coho (silver) in August and September at 6-12 lb. Lingcod from July to September at 8-30 lb. Rockfish and Chinook (king) are also fished.

Jig, bait and troll. Rockfish release devices are mandatory.

License and rules

A federal halibut stamp is required. Charter halibut has stricter limits than private boats. Lingcod and rockfish have their own seasons, so verify all.

Come between May and September, when halibut are running. Save August and September for silvers, and July onward for lingcod.
