Homer Spit end (shore fishing)

The feel

The cobble beach at the tip of the Homer Spit drops into deep water, so you can surfcast for bottomfish on any tide. No boat is needed. The pilings by the ferry dock are the popular casting spot, and crowds are high.

A common setup is a 9 to 12 foot surfcasting rod with bait herring and a 4 ounce weight. Casting spinners can work too. Feeder kings are here all year, and bottomfish year round.

Species and timing

Coho from mid-July to mid-September at 6 to 12 lb. Dolly Varden from May to July at 10 to 16 in. Feeder (winter) kings all year, and bottomfish year round.
