McHugh Creek Trail

The feel

This is a moderate hike to Rabbit Lake, with rainbow trout fishing at the end. McHugh Creek runs through the valley, and the picnic area at the trailhead has bathrooms.

The climb is steep for the first 3 miles. Where the trail leaves the spruce, take the upward branch rather than going straight. On the way back, a small willow grove can look like the wrong way, but the trail continues through it.

Water and access

Rabbit Lake, reached by trail from the McHugh Creek day use area. Take the Seward Highway south to milepost 111; the park entrance is on the left.

Species and timing

Rainbow trout.

Parking

The McHugh Creek day use area charges a $5 parking fee, so bring exact change. An Alaska State Parks Pass also works.

Hazards

Steep descents can lead to sprains or breaks, so go carefully. Early in the season expect deep snow and possible avalanche conditions.

Bathrooms are at the trailhead picnic area. McHugh Creek runs through the valley.

Season and access

Via the Seward Highway, May to September. A lot of snow lies past mile 2 early in the season. The hike is 4.4 to 7.8 miles with 1,800 to 2,411 ft of gain, and takes 6 to 8 hours.

Wait for the snow past mile 2 to clear before you go. Pace the steep descent so you do not end up running.

• Bring $5 in exact change for the day use area, or an Alaska State Parks Pass.
• Block 6 to 8 hours for the round trip.
