Klutina River (Copper Center)
Glennallen
The feel
The Klutina is a glacial tributary of the Copper River loaded with kings and sockeye. Chinook run June and July at 15 to 40 lb, and sockeye come in July and August at 5 to 8 lb. You fish from the bank or from a guided boat out of Copper Center.
Almost all the land along the river belongs to Ahtna, Inc., or other private owners. Some of the best holes are reserved for guests of private campgrounds, while mid-river gravel bars are open to the public but require wading. Crowds run medium.
What to expect
- Water and access
- Bank and boat access from Copper Center, much of it via lodges and private launches off the Richardson Highway. A public boat launch is on the south side of the river, east side of the highway, at the bridge, about Mile 104.9. Anglers also park along the right-of-way on both sides of the Old Richardson Highway bridge in Copper Center.
- Species and timing
- Chinook 15 to 40 lb, sockeye 5 to 8 lb, and rainbow trout.
- Methods and gear
- Bank, spin or drift boat.
- License and rules
- This is a sport fishery separate from the Chitina dipnet. Check king and sockeye rules by date and verify limits.
- Crowds and best time
- Crowds are medium.
- Parking
- Right-of-way parking at the bridge.
- Season and access
- Open June to September. Access is largely through private land and lodges, so ask first.
Mingo says
Plan kings for July into early August and reds for June through August. Gravel bars mid-river need wading, so dress for it.
Before you go
- Ask first at the lodges and private launches before you cross private land.
- Budget for an Ahtna access permit to park or launch off the road corridor, from about $15/day.
- Check the king and sockeye rules by date and verify limits before you fish.
