What it is like
Matanuska River Park in Palmer is a leafy borough campground on the Matanuska's bank, minutes from downtown. The 85 sites are first-come, with showers, a dump station, trails, a playground and riverfront sites. The season runs May to September, and a fee applies.
The park is in Palmer, and Palmer Historic Downtown has murals, a visitor-center garden and mountains photobombing every block. Downtown Palmer has colony-era storefronts, a Friday market and farm-to-table dining, with Pioneer Peak looming over it all. For an evening out, Klondike Mike's, 0.8 miles off, is a rowdy Main Street watering hole with a grill.
