Hatcher Pass Road Dispersed
Palmer
The feel
Hatcher Pass Road runs below Independence Mine alongside the Little Susitna River, and the setting is alpine tundra with river access. Many vehicle pull-offs sit next to the river, which makes it easy to get down to the water.
Those pull-offs are for stopping at the river, not for sleeping. Camping is not allowed on roadsides or pull-offs, so a night here means a designated site or a spot at least one-half mile from the road.
What to expect
- Layout and setting
- Gravel pull-offs along Hatcher Pass Road below Independence Mine, by the Little Susitna River, in alpine tundra. Camping is not allowed on roadsides or pull-offs.
- Check-in and stay
- The designated sites are Government Peak Campground, Gold Mint Trailhead and Fishhook Trailhead; elsewhere, camp at least one-half mile from a road or developed facility.
- Fees and reservations
- Free, first come. No special use permit is required for backcountry camping.
- Hazards
- Hatcher Pass is an avalanche hazard area. Weather can change quickly, and hypothermia is a life-threatening risk. Firearms may not be discharged within one-quarter mile of a developed facility.
- Bathrooms and water
- No facilities. Pack everything in and out.
- Season and access
- June to September. Avalanches can close Hatcher Pass Road; in January 2025 the state closed it past Skeetawk Ski Area for days.
Mingo says
Plan for June through September. Pack warm layers, because hypothermia is a real risk on this pass.
Before you go
- Bring a camp stove, because backcountry fires are prohibited and fires are allowed only in designated fire rings.
- Camp at least one-half mile from the road, or use Government Peak Campground, Gold Mint Trailhead or Fishhook Trailhead.
- Tell someone where you will be and when you expect to return.
- Call DNR at (907) 269-8400 with questions about the rules.
