Matanuska Peak Trail

The feel

The trail passes through forest to alpine to talus field to pinnacle. The first half runs through old growth forest. At about 1500 feet it clears the forest and crosses alpine tundra with views of the Knik and Matanuska rivers and Cook Inlet.

After about two miles the trail opens into the Matanuska Peak Bowl along McRoberts Creek, with wild blueberries in season and a picnic table at the end of the bowl. The final miles are a strenuous climb over scree slopes and boulder fields, with some rock-hopping but no major drop-offs. From the summit you see countless snowy ridges of the Chugach Mountains, with Mount Marcus Baker 39 miles in the distance.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 11 miles total. The trail climbs 5670 ft in just over 4 miles, on dirt tread 2 to 4 feet wide with markers every 200 feet, then scree and boulders. The upper trail is a route over rocks marked by wands.

About 8 hours, a long day.

Crowds and best time

An annual mountain running event is held on Lazy Mountain and Matanuska Peak in July.

Parking

Small off-road parking for five vehicles at the south end of Smith Road, 1 1/2 miles east of the Old Glenn Highway turn.

Dogs

Keep dogs on leash and/or under your control.

Hazards

Loose large rock can dislodge on the final slope. The trail is muddy and slippery after a rain or frost. Bears and other wildlife are native to the area.

Mingo says

Confirm the Smith Road trailhead has reopened before you drive out. Mud and frost make the trail slippery, so favor dry days. Many people stop at the picnic table, where 2,300 feet of rocky trail remains.

Before you go

• Wear gloves for the rock scramble on the final slope.
• Make noise in the brush to warn bears.
• Bring enough food, water and clothing for a long day.
