Lazy Mountain
The feel
Almost immediately after the parking area, the trail climbs the steep west face of the mountain, with hardly a switchback or respite for some 2,000 feet. The first half runs through cottonwoods, aspen, spruce, birch and tall fireweed.
At about 1,500 feet the trail crosses into alpine tundra with sweeping views of the Knik and Matanuska Rivers, and a picnic table marks the halfway point. The summit looks over the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains. Going down can leave your quads sore enough that people call it Lazy Legs.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, about 5 miles total, with 3000 to 3,100 ft of gain. A steep, eroded packed-dirt path through forest, then alpine tundra to the summit. Rated hard.
- Time
- About 4 hours.
- Crowds and best time
- In icy winter, hikers wear microspikes.
- Parking
- Trailhead at 2955 Mountain Trail Circle, Palmer, off Huntley Road. Leave the lot by the narrower footpath on the uphill side of the far end, not the wide Morgan Horse Trail.
- Fees and passes
- $5 or a Matanuska-Susitna Borough parking pass.
- Hazards
- Dust on the eroded trail is slippery when dry and also when wet. Winds blow hard and cold above 3,000 feet, and sleet or snow can appear even in midsummer.
- Season and access
- Open all year. Spring and early summer can be muddy; check the Mat-Su Borough website for trail closures.
Mingo says
Pick a calm day, because the summit is exposed above the Matanuska and Knik confluence. Ice season calls for microspikes, and mud season for patience.
Before you go
- Buy a $5 pass or bring a Matanuska-Susitna Borough parking pass.
- Pack a windbreaker for the ridge above 3,000 feet.
- Choose the Lazy Moose Trail instead if you want the gentler route, an 8-mile round trip to the same place.
- Check the Mat-Su Borough website for closures before you drive out.
