Pioneer Peak
Palmer
The feel
Pioneer Peak is a 6,398 ft twin-summit peak in the Chugach Mountains, beside the Knik River nine miles south of Palmer. It is the defining skyline from Palmer. It was named in 1939 for the pioneers of the Matanuska agricultural colony of the mid-1930s, and the first ascent was in June 1936, by Vernon Haik and John Wolffe via the Northwest Face.
The Pioneer Ridge Trail starts in forest and climbs the eastern shoulder to a treeless ridge, with views of Knik Glacier and, on a clear day, Denali. Higher up, the rock is crumbly Chugach rock that can come loose in your hand, and the drop-offs are steep. The north summit, the true summit, has no trail.

Mingo says
