Rapids Lake

The feel

Rapids Lake is a stocked lake in the middle of the Alaska Range, long and narrow in the cut of a canyon. To the north you look over the Gunnysack Creek drainage, and to the south the mountains east of Black Rapids glacier.

The lake is 100 yards east of the highway through the woods. The shoreline is steep, so it is better fished with a canoe or inflatable raft.

What to expect

Water and access

Take the Richardson Highway south of Delta Junction toward Glennallen. At mile 225.4 turn into a pull out on the west side of the road; the lake is 100 yards east of the highway through the woods.

Species and timing

Rainbow trout and lake trout, year-round.

Methods and gear

The steep shoreline is better fished with a canoe or inflatable raft.

A pull out on the west side of the Richardson Highway at mile 225.4.

Fish it in any month, since the trout fishing runs year-round. Choose a canoe or raft over fishing from the bank.

Before you go

• Watch for mile 225.4 on the Richardson Highway south of Delta Junction.
• Park in the pull out on the west side of the road.
• Allow for the 100-yard walk east through the woods.
