Snowbird Hut (MCA)
Palmer
The feel
Snowbird Hut sits in the Talkeetna Mountains on the northern edge of the Snowbird Glacier, reached from Archangel Valley near Hatcher Pass. It is a year-round destination for backcountry skiers, climbers and adventurous hikers.
Inside are 2 double bunks, 2 single bunks and a 6-person overflow loft, so it accommodates 6 to 12 people. The hut is a stop on the Talkeetna Hut-to-Hut Traverse, which connects with the Mint and Bomber Huts, and climbers use it for Higher Spire and Lower Spire.
What to expect
- Layout and setting
- One enclosed hut above the glacier, with bunks and a loft for overflow.
- Check-in and stay
- Open to the public and managed on an open basis. Guests should accommodate later-arriving parties when possible.
- Fees and reservations
- Free to use, and it cannot be reserved in advance.
- Bathrooms and water
- No water or toilet, so bring everything.
- Season and access
- Year-round, after a strenuous off-trail climb from Archangel Valley. Winter access needs ski skills.
Mingo says
Winter trips need ski skills, so match the trip to your ability. The hut is open all year, so the season is your call.
Before you go
- Bring kerosene for the heater, since diesel and white gas are not allowed in it.
- Carry white gas or unleaded gasoline for the stove and lanterns.
- Put skis in the outside racks, and take out any extra food, since leftovers attract animals.
- Bring everything else you need, because the hut is an enclosed shelter only.
