Skilak Lake Road Dispersed Pullouts
Cooper Landing
The feel
These are free, established primitive pullouts and gravel spurs along the Skilak Loop backroad in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, near Cooper Landing. The road runs 19 miles with entrances at Sterling Highway mileposts 58 and 75.2.
There are no facilities here. You camp only in sites that have been used before, and you carry everything in and out. Campsites are not designated on the refuge canoe routes either, so the same rule applies there: pick a spot that has already been developed.
What to expect
- Check-in and stay
- First come, first served. Camping may not exceed 14 days in a 30-day period on the refuge.
- Crowds and best time
- Drive the road at 10 to 15 mph early in the day, before boaters with trailers, or late in the evening.
- Parking and rig size
- Muddy gravel is expected on the road from late April to early May, and conditions normalize by mid-May.
- Fees and reservations
- Camping is free. Sites are not reservable.
- Dogs
- Pets must be on a leash no longer than nine feet, under control, with waste cleaned up.
- Hazards
- Black bears, brown bears and moose are on the road. Hike in daylight, with company, and be bear aware.
- Cell signal
- Limited to none throughout the refuge.
- Bathrooms and water
- No facilities and no water. Bring what you need.
- Season and access
- May to September. Backcountry camping is permitted 1/4 mile away from the Sterling Highway, Skilak Lake Road, Swanson River Road and Swan Lake Road.
Mingo says
Aim for mid-May through September, once the muddy gravel of spring has firmed up and settled down. Drive the loop in the morning or in the evening. Pack rain gear for late summer and fall.
Before you go
- Call the refuge at (907) 743-9146 before mid-May if you are driving a heavy RV.
- Bring headnets and insect repellent.
- Where fires are allowed in developed refuge campgrounds, use grates, barbeques or stoves, collect only dead or down wood, attend the fire and put it out completely.
- Store food, coolers, trash and scented items in a vehicle or bear-resistant box when not in use.
