Powerline Pass Backcountry (Glen Alps)
Anchorage
The feel
This is free dispersed backcountry camping in Chugach State Park, reached from the Glen Alps trailhead at the end of Toilsome Road. The Powerline trail is open to hiking, biking and skiing, so you will share it with other users, and moose frequent the trails.
Glen Alps has toilets and water at the trailhead. Beyond it the backcountry has no facilities, so you carry in what you need and carry it out.
What to expect
- Layout and setting
- Dispersed backcountry sites, with no developed pads. Camping is allowed only in designated areas or over 1/2 mile from the trailhead.
- Check-in and stay
- No permit is required, but tell someone where you will be and when you are due back.
- Crowds and best time
- Many trails here are multi-use, so be considerate of other users.
- Parking and rig size
- Parking is at the Glen Alps trailhead at the end of Toilsome Road.
- Fees and reservations
- Camping is free and first-come. Trailhead parking is $5.
- Dogs
- Leash dogs in the parking lot. On trails and in the backcountry they must be under control.
- Hazards
- Moose frequent the trails; do not approach them. Chugach State Park is an avalanche hazard area and the weather can change quickly.
- Bathrooms and water
- Toilet at the Glen Alps trailhead. The backcountry has no facilities, so pack it in and pack it out.
- Season and access
- June to September. From the Seward Highway, take O'Malley Road toward the mountains, turn right on Hillside Dr, left at Upper Huffman, then onto Toilsome Road to Glen Alps at its end.
Mingo says
Plan the trip for June through September, when the sites are in season. Keep a safe distance from any moose on the trail.
