What it is like
Lower Skilak Lake Campground near Sterling feels remote, sitting near the lake's outlet on the Skilak Loop. The 14 sites are first-come, open May to September, and popular with boaters and anglers. The camp has vault toilets, a boat launch and bear lockers.
The camp is about 11 miles from Sterling. Burney's Trail, 1.7 miles away, is a quick forest climb to a panorama of Skilak Lake and the Kenai Mountains. The Seven Lakes Trail is a flat forest ramble past a string of moosey lakes, a gentler day than the climbs. From late June to August, the Kenai River late-run sockeye fishery draws anglers, and it is the largest sockeye sport fishery in the state.
A remote-feeling camp near the lake's outlet, popular with boaters and anglers on the Skilak Loop.
