Izaak Walton State Recreation Site

The feel

Izaak Walton sits in mature spruce forest at the confluence of the Kenai and Moose Rivers, where the tea-colored Moose River meets the blue-green Kenai. The meeting of the two rivers is a major holding area for thousands of sockeye salmon migrating to spawning grounds in June and July. It is a fishing hub with fly-fishing, a boat launch and signs about the Moose River Archaeological Site.

Upstream of the Sterling Highway bridge the channel broadens into wetlands that stage swans, ducks and geese in spring. Moose can sometimes be seen in the early morning. The campground is named after the author of The Compleat Angler.

31 to 38 sites on 8 acres in spruce forest at the river confluence, with one picnic table per site, toilets, water, river access and a boat launch.

Camping is limited to 7 days.

Crowds and best time

Sockeye gather here in June and July.

Parking and rig size

RVs up to 32 feet.

Fees and reservations

$20 per site per night, $5 daily parking and $25 for the boat launch. Sites are first come, first served with no online reservations.

Strong currents and cold water in the Kenai River.

Season and access

Open May to September. The campground is at milepost 81 of the Sterling Highway.

Come in June or July, when sockeye stack up where the two rivers meet. Scan the wetlands upstream of the bridge in spring for swans and geese.
