Virgin Creek Falls
The feel
The trailhead is in a small cul de sac at the uphill end of Timberline Drive, and the trail goes through an enchanted forest. It is one of the easiest hikes in Girdwood and very well marked. Girdwood is a temperate rain forest, so a rain jacket is a good idea.
At the falls you descend a small trail to the pool, and the rocks around it may be slippery. Most people take pictures at the pool, and weddings have been performed there. Mind the tree roots and the steep embankment by the river's edge. With parental guidance, young children can make the short distance.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, 0.4 to 0.5 mile round trip, with 150 to 180 ft of gain. A well-marked footpath beside the creek, with tree roots, then a small trail down to the pool.
- Time
- About 0.5 hour.
- Crowds and best time
- A popular spot, so expect others at the falls. The typical season is May to October.
- Parking
- There is no parking lot. Park on the street at the end of Timberline Drive, where there is room for one vehicle, maybe two. There is no room for buses and big vans to turn around.
- Fees and passes
- No parking fee.
- Dogs
- Dogs are welcome; keep them under control.
- Kids
- With parental guidance, even young children can make the short distance.
- Hazards
- Slippery rocks at the pool, tree roots and a steep embankment by the river's edge. Many braided footpaths above the falls make it easy to get disoriented.
- Season and access
- Typical season May to October. In winter the trail is fairly packed down and can be icy in spots.
Mingo says
Go from May to October, the typical season for this short walk. If parking would block a driveway, have a bread bowl of soup at The Bake Shop and try again later.
Before you go
- From Alyeska Highway, take Timberline Drive to the very end.
- Do not park in anyone's driveway or block driveways or turnarounds.
- Tour operators need a permit; Girdwood Parks and Recreation is at 907-343-8373.
