California Creek Trail

The feel

The trail follows California Creek through old-growth forest. It starts on a well-maintained 8-foot gravel tread, and after it splits from Beaver Pond Trail the route becomes less distinct. From there it climbs the ridge directly above the creek into Chugach State Park at a consistently steep grade, with some drainage crossings.

A historic gabion wall for power generation during mining operations sits just below the trail. It is used mostly as a hiking trail and as an up-track for Abe's downhill.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 3.3 to 3.5 miles with 1056 to 1,066 ft of gain. Steep and switchbacking, and less distinct once it leaves the Beaver Pond Trail sign.

Time

2 to 2.5 hours.

Parking

The trailhead is shared with Beaver Pond Trail, 120 ft from the three-car pullout on Crow Creek Road at the California Creek Bridge.

Fees and passes

$5 day use fee, and a parks pass is accepted.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed.

Hazards

Steep, consistent grade with some drainage crossings. Motorized vehicles and pack and saddle use are prohibited.

Season and access

May to October. Coming into Girdwood on Alyeska Highway, take a left onto Crow Creek Road, and the trailhead is on the left.

Aim for May through October, when the trail is in season. Connect it with Abe's Trail if you want a loop.

Before you go

• Park at the three-car pullout on Crow Creek Road at the California Creek Bridge.
• Carry the $5 day use fee or a parks pass.
• Keep right at the trailhead, where the Beaver Pond Trail also starts.
