Skyline Trail
The feel
Skyline Trail is a very strenuous route that gives quick access to the mountains of the Mystery Creek Wilderness Unit. It rises rapidly from the Sterling Highway on a native surface that is steep and rocky, with some loose gravel. The whole trail lies within the 2019 Swan Lake Fire burn.
The effort pays off in views of the Kenai Mountains, the Kenai Peninsula lowlands and Cook Inlet. Denali is visible to the north on clear days. Wildflowers grow along the path, and many people stop at the Saddle, a few hundred feet in elevation below the summit.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, 2 miles one way, with 1600 to 2000 ft of gain. Steep native surface with loose gravel in places.
- Time
- About 2.5 hours.
- Parking
- A parking area next to the road, on the Sterling Highway near Cooper Landing.
- Hazards
- Bears are a very real possibility, especially in the fall. The ascent is steep and the area is rocky, so wear shoes with good traction.
- Bathrooms and water
- Restrooms are next to the road at the parking area.
Mingo says
Aim for a clear day, since Denali shows from the high ground only when the sky is open. Push past the Saddle if you have the legs.
Before you go
- Bring bear spray.
- Wear shoes with good traction for the loose gravel.
- Sign the book kept in a box at the summit.
