Skilak Lookout Trail

The feel

The trail passes through the Hidden Creek burn of May 1996, which burned 5,200 acres, and ends at a rocky area overlooking Skilak Lake. It gains elevation gradually, with several steep sections near the end. Most of it is dry and in good condition, though a few spots can be wet and muddy, and high grasses hang into the trail later in the summer.

From the end you can see Skilak Lake, the Kenai Mountains and the lower portion of the Kenai River, and from the alpine zone you look down on gull and cormorant rookeries on the lake's rocky islands. Berry picking along the trail can be fair in late summer.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 4 miles total, with about 700 ft of gain; a steady climb with several steep sections near the end.

Time

Between about 2 hours and 3 to 4 hours round trip.

Parking

The parking area is on the north side of Skilak Lake Road at mile 5.4 from the east entrance junction with the Sterling Highway, and the trail begins on the south side. It is a small lot.

Fees and passes

Parking is free.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

Hazards

Several steep sections near the end, wet and muddy areas, and bears, so stay loud.

Cell signal

Cell reception is generally absent.

Bathrooms and water

No water is available on the trail during most of the summer, so bring your own.

Season and access

Best from May through September.

Aim for May through September, and save late summer for the berries. Wet days turn parts of the trail muddy, so pack rain gear.

Before you go

• Park on the north side of Skilak Lake Road, about 2 miles west of Hidden Lake Campground, then cross to the trail on the south side.
• Wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry all the water you need.
• Bring mosquito repellent in spring.
