Mt. Baldy (Eagle River)

The feel

Locals use this as a short aerobic hike with nice views. The trail winds through trees and scrub, then climbs above the plant growth through rocky terrain. The front slope has many rocks and the occasional hand scramble. Both routes end on Baldy ridge.

From the top the view takes in Eagle River, Anchorage, Knik Arm and the Chugach mountains, and the ridgeline is good for birding.

Mingo says

Go on to Blacktails, a steep incline half a mile along the ridge, for even better views. Expect mud on the descent, so take it carefully.

Before you go

  • Stay on the trail through the Wallace Homestead, which is private property.
  • Bring a Chugach State Park day-use parking pass or decal, or pay the $5 day use fee.
  • Pack layers, bear spray and a map.
