South Fork Eagle River Backcountry
Eagle River
The feel
This is hike-in camping in Chugach State Park on the South Fork Valley Trail, which runs 4.8 miles one way to Eagle Lake with 850 feet of elevation gain. After a bridge over the South Fork Eagle River at the 1 mile mark, the trail crosses the valley toward Eagle and Symphony Lakes, which were dammed by a rockslide.
The trail between the lakes crosses a mile-wide boulder field, and flat camping spots are scarce beside the lakeshores. Moose, bear and ptarmigan share the valley.
What to expect
- Layout and setting
- Dispersed backcountry camping with no developed sites, toward Eagle and Symphony Lakes. Camping is allowed only over 1/2 mile from the trailhead.
- Check-in and stay
- No check-in. Camping in an undeveloped area of a state park is limited to 10 consecutive days.
- Crowds and best time
- This is one of the most popular trailheads in Chugach State Park. Go during the week or early in the morning for fewer people.
- Parking and rig size
- The lot is limited. Do not block access for local residents.
- Fees and reservations
- Camping is free and first-come. Trailhead parking is $5 or a Chugach State Park parking pass.
- Dogs
- Leash dogs in the parking lot. On trails and in the backcountry they must be under control.
- Hazards
- The trail crosses avalanche-prone slopes. The route between the lakes is boulder field with tricky footing where the trail can be lost, and bears and moose live in the valley.
- Bathrooms and water
- Toilet at the trailhead only; the backcountry has no facilities, so pack it in and pack it out. Purify drinking water to avoid giardiasis.
- Season and access
- June to September. Bikes are not allowed on the trail.
Mingo says
Aim for a weekday or an early start, because this lot fills up. Wear boots with stable soles for the boulders between the lakes. Trekking poles help there.
