Mount Magnificent
The feel
The climb goes through the upper portion of the treeline, emerges above it at the Mile-Hi Saddle, then heads east along the ridgeline to Mount Magnificent. The summit gives views of Eagle River, the Knik Arm and the Chugach Front Range. The grade averages 19% and reaches 55% at its steepest, which is why this is rated hard.
Mud and slick footing mark the lower section, and deep drifts sit on the north-facing sides of the knolls along the ridge. There is no water en route.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, 6.2 miles total, with 2,902 to 3061 ft of gain; through the upper treeline to the Mile-Hi Saddle, then east along the ridge. At the first saddle, turn right for Mount Magnificent.
- Time
- About 4.5 hours out and back.
- Parking
- A few spots sit off the road at the end of Linx Way in the Mile-Hi neighborhood, with no restrictions on parking along the street.
- Hazards
- Take care on the middle section and the final ascent when snow is present; a small avalanche has been triggered on the north slopes of the final ascent. Very steep in places, with a maximum grade of 55%.
- Bathrooms and water
- No water en route.
Mingo says
Pick a snow-free day for this one. Snow is what makes the upper route risky, so wait for it to melt off.
Before you go
- Carry all the water you need for the whole climb.
- Park at the end of Linx Way in the Mile-Hi neighborhood, where only a few spots exist.
- From Eagle River Road just past the Mile 3 marker, turn right on Mile High Road and keep taking the turn going up.
