Ballaine Lake Trail
The feel
The loop starts at Ballaine Lake, where a small pavilion and parking area sit by the water, then runs through dense birch woods in the forested UAF North Campus. There are lake views and birding along the way. Expect mud and mosquitoes.
Moose are very common on the UAF trail system, and hostile encounters have happened, so give them room and cede the trail.

Plan your hike for May through October. When the trail is soft, avoid the wet and muddy areas, which are the easiest to damage.
Before you go
- Pack bug spray for the mosquitoes.
- No camping, no fires, no hunting or trapping on North Campus.
- In winter, do not walk or take dogs on designated ski trails; only skis are allowed there.
