Thunderbird Falls
Chugiak
The feel
The trail runs through birch forest on a steep hillside above Eklutna Canyon. After a brief uphill section it levels out and skirts the edge of the canyon, with a subdivision close beside the path, to a refurbished viewing deck. From the deck you look at a 200 foot falls.
It is one of the most popular first hikes for families with small children, about a half-hour drive from town. The falls often freeze in winter and form ice sculptures.

Mingo says
Come in winter if you want to see the falls frozen into ice sculptures. Take children down to the water only when you can keep them close.
