Beach Lake Trails
Chugiak
The feel
Beach Lake is a network of cross country running and ski loops in Chugiak that opens to multi-use in summer. The main loops are 3, 4, 5 and 10k, with extra warmup loops and connectors for variety.
The loops were built for skiing, so several climbs are steep enough to be challenging, and some sit right at the limit of traction. Bear and moose sightings are common, and the area is unusually mosquito heavy.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- A network of 10 to 17 miles of singletrack and doubletrack loops, rated Intermediate, with 3, 4, 5 and 10k main loops. Several climbs are steep, and cutoffs let you skip the worst of them.
- Parking
- Take the South Birchwood Loop/Chugiak High School exit off the Glenn Highway. Park at Chugiak High School near the trailhead, or at the ski chalet further down the road, which is better if school is in session.
- Hazards
- Bear and moose sightings are common. The area is unusually mosquito heavy.
- Season and access
- Open to multi-use in summer. Winter riding needs a fat bike, and the area is ski-only when the trails are groomed.
Mingo says
Come in summer, since winter belongs to skiers. Bring a fat bike if you want to ride outside the summer season.
Before you go
- Pack bug repellent for any extended stops.
- Use the maps posted at the trailheads and at major intersections.
- Park at the ski chalet instead of Chugiak High School when school is in session.
