Ninilchik beach (river mouth)

The feel

This is a mellow lower-Inlet option for surf halibut and for salmon staging before they run the Ninilchik River. Beach access is at Ninilchik village and the state rec area at the river mouth, and crowds are low.

Ninilchik Beach has views across Cook Inlet and is one of the top spots in Alaska for razor clamming. The View Campground sits on a bluff above the beach, with a set of stairs down to the sand. Short hikes from the campgrounds also reach the river for king, silver and pink salmon, steelhead and Dolly Varden.

Water and access

Beach access at Ninilchik village and the state rec area at the river mouth. Ocean water; stairs lead down from View Campground.

Species and timing

Coho and pink stage off the river mouth late Jul to early Sep. Coho run August to September at 6-12 lb; pinks July to August at 3-5 lb. Kings in the nearshore in June when open, plus surf halibut.

Kings are fished only when open.

Crowds and best time

Low crowds. Fishing is tide dependent.

Hazards

Heavy rainfall or snowmelt can flood and temporarily close areas.

Season and access

June to September. A daily-use fee is added to overnight camping fees, paid at the self-pay station.

Aim for late July to early September, when coho and pinks gather at the mouth. Check the tide first, since the bite depends on it.

Before you go

• Pay the daily-use fee at the self-pay station.
• Keep RVs to the maximum length of 35 feet.
• Check the Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations before targeting kings in June.
