Deep Creek tractor launch (Ninilchik)
Ninilchik
The feel
There is no ramp here. Boats are backed into the Cook Inlet surf on a trailer, pushed by a tractor, straight off the Deep Creek State Recreation Area beach just south of Ninilchik. Mornings are busy with halibut boats.
The recreation area has toilets, water and 100 campsites. Bald eagles are visible year-round, and whales, seals and otters can be seen offshore.
What to expect
- Water and access
- Beach tractor launch at the Deep Creek State Recreation Area, Mile 137.3 Sterling Highway just south of Ninilchik. Boats are backed into the surf on a trailer.
- Species and timing
- Halibut from May to August at 20-100+ lb. Chinook (king) in May and June when open. Coho (silver) also fish here.
- Methods and gear
- Troll, jig and bait.
- License and rules
- A federal halibut stamp is required. Cook Inlet king seasons are heavily regulated and often closed, so verify before you target kings.
- Crowds and best time
- Crowds are high, and mornings are busy with halibut boats.
- Hazards
- Launch depends entirely on tide and surf.
- Bathrooms and water
- Toilets and water are available in the recreation area.
- Season and access
- Summer only, roughly late Apr to Labor Day, tide and surf permitting. Tractor launch hours run May 1 through September 4, for example 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from May 27 to June 30 and 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in July. Hours may change.
Mingo says
Plan around the tide and surf, because the launch runs on them. Aim for the May to August halibut window.
