Kasilof River/Crooked Creek

The feel

This fishery targets hatchery-origin king salmon returning to Crooked Creek, a tributary of the Kasilof River. ADF&G annually stocks approximately 125K king salmon smolt for it. Most anglers fish from the bank at the Crooked Creek recreational site, a short walk from where Crooked Creek meets the Kasilof River, and drift boats launch upstream.

The site is a 105 acre state recreation site with 79 campsites. Moose, black and brown bear, lynx, squirrels and hares live in the area, so keep a clean camp and do not feed wildlife.

What to expect

Water and access

Kasilof River and Crooked Creek, fished from the bank or by drift boat launched upstream. Take the Sterling Highway to Cohoe Loop Road (turn off near milepost 111), then Rilinda Road to Crooked Creek State Recreation Area.

Species and timing

Early-run king salmon from May to July; the site is most popular in May and June. A small steelhead run comes in spring and fall, with Dolly Varden, sockeye and silver salmon in summer.

Bank fishing at the recreational site, or drift boat from upstream.

License and rules

Regulations are liberal and promote harvest of the enhanced stock. No retention of rainbow trout or steelhead trout.

Crowds and best time

Busiest in May and June for kings.

Parking

36 day-use parking sites. Campsites carry an RV size limit of 35 feet and a camping limit of 7 days.

Moose, black and brown bear, lynx, squirrels and hares live in the area.

King salmon May to July.

Aim for May and June, when the bank fishery is at its most popular. Be ready to release rainbow and steelhead trout, since neither can be kept.
