Kasilof River SRS drift launch

The feel

This is the boat launch at Kasilof River State Recreation Site, set in a wooded stretch of the river right beside the Sterling Highway bridge. It is popular with drift boat fishing guides and sport fishermen, and the site has 25 day use parking sites.

The river holds sockeye, Chinook, coho and steelhead. Powerboats are restricted on much of the Kasilof, so this is a drift-boat river. The launch is steep at low water but functional.

What to expect

Water and access

Drift-boat launch at Mile 109 of the Sterling Highway, with day-use sites, ADA toilets and water. Bank fishing is also a method here.

Species and timing

Sockeye run July and August at 4 to 7 lb. Steelhead are sea-run and come in September and October. Chinook and coho are also in the river, and the kings are largely hatchery.

Aim for July and August when the sockeye are in. Come in September or October if steelhead are the goal.

Before you go

• Budget about $15 for day-use parking and launch, and confirm the current fee with Alaska State Parks.
• Plan your float before you launch, since there is no public takeout on the lower river.
• Bring a drift boat, not a powerboat.
