Johnson Lake

The feel

Johnson Lake is a stocked lake with catchable-size and brood stock rainbow trout, set in a 332 acre wooded state recreation area near the town of Kasilof. The area has camping, toilets, water, picnic shelters and a boat launch, and people come to camp, canoe, fish and walk.

Only non-motorized boats or electric motors are allowed on the water. Moose, black and brown bear, lynx, squirrels and hares live in the area.

What to expect

Water and access

Lake with a boat launch. From mile 110.5 on the Sterling Highway, go east on Johnson Lake Road 0.5 mile to Tustumena Lake Road, then left 0.1 mile to the entrance on the right.

Species and timing

Rainbow trout, stocked as catchable-size and brood stock fish. Fishing is described as excellent year-round.

16 day-use parking sites.

Go whenever the trout call you, since the fishing runs year-round. Pick a boat that suits the rules, because only paddle power or an electric motor works here.

• Groups of over 12 people need a reservation for the group picnic area.
• Check the state parks fee page for campsite and parking fees.
• Keep the lake and access sites free of litter, and do not feed animals.
