Cushman Lake

The feel

Cushman Lake is a former gravel pit next to the Tanana River, part of the larger Tanana Lakes Recreational Area run by Fairbanks Northstar Borough Parks and Recreation. The 750 acre multi-use area is just minutes from downtown Fairbanks.

You can fish for Arctic grayling, northern pike, king salmon and rainbow trout from May to January. The lake complex lies between South Cushman and Lathrop St., and you reach it by following the signs from South Cushman St. to the parking area.

Water and access

Lake in a former gravel pit beside the Tanana River, between South Cushman and Lathrop St. Go south on South Cushman St. to the sign for Tanana Lakes Recreation Area, turn right and continue to the parking area.

Species and timing

Arctic grayling, northern pike, king salmon and rainbow trout, May to January.

A multi-use recreation area, so other visitors share it.

A parking area at the end of the access road.

Fish it from May through January, since that is when all four species are open. It is minutes from downtown, so a short outing works.
