What it is like
Lower Ohmer Lake Campground near Sterling offers three wooded sites beside a mirror-calm lake on the Skilak Loop. The camp is free and first-come, open May to September, with a vault toilet, fire rings and a rough boat launch. There is no water at the camp, so bring your own.
The camp is about 16 miles from Sterling. Upper Skilak Lake Campground, 0.7 miles away, sits on the wild, wind-driven shore of Skilak Lake with 25 sites and a boat launch. Engineer Lake Campground, 1 mile off, is a small camp and trailhead for the Seven Lakes Trail. For a steep reward, Skyline Trail climbs nearly straight up to a ridge.
