What it is like
Skarland Trail (UAF) is a green-rated, beginner singletrack loop of about 6 miles through the forest on UAF's North Campus, directly accessible from the university, near Fairbanks. Riding runs late May through September, and the trail is groomed for skiing in winter. It is worth checking current status before riding, because North Campus trails have been closed periodically for a goshawk nesting area.
The trail is about 4.4 miles from Fairbanks, with campus stops close by. Ballaine Lake, 0.8 miles away, is a small, stocked pond off University Avenue with Arctic grayling, open from May through September, good for a quick evening cast. Chena's Alaskan Grill, 1.9 miles away, serves a full dinner menu of contemporary Alaskan and global flavors on the Chena River.
