Hatcher Pass Road

Palmer

The feel

This is a gravel climb to the pass, with old gold-mine views and a long descent as the reward. The road is narrow and steep above Mile 17.5, with tight hairpin corners, and the setting is alpine, with the area running from a valley floor near 1,000 ft to summits above 6,000 ft. The summit sits at 3,886 ft.

Highway vehicles share the road in summer and passage is slow. Hatcher Pass is about 20 minutes from Palmer or Wasilla.

What to expect

Route and terrain
A 12 mile out and back climb on gravel, rated advanced. The road section from Mile 17.5 to Mile 32.5 is gravel, narrow and steep. The Palmer-Fishhook Road is paved to Independence Mine State Historical Park.
Crowds and best time
Expect slow traffic, including highway vehicles, in summer.
Fees and passes
A daily parking fee applies.
Hazards
Steep grades, rough road and tight hairpin corners. RVs and large vehicles are not recommended.
Season and access
The summit road is generally open about July 1 through September 15, depending on snow. The Mile 17.5 to 32.5 section is not maintained and not open in winter, and the last mile to Independence Mine is closed in winter months.

Mingo says

Plan the ride for July through mid September, once snow has cleared the summit road. Snow decides the opening, so confirm conditions before you drive out.
