Government Peak Rec Area

The feel

Government Peak Recreation Area sits above Palmer in boreal forest, with about 9 miles of wide, looping trails that start at the chalet. In summer the trails are grassy paths, good for walking and running, with the Chugach Range in bold view.

The same trail network serves walkers, mountain bikers and equestrians. Three ski trails turn into walking trails by summer and start and end at the chalet, which has restrooms. Two singletrack mountain bike trails run 4.2 miles with two-way traffic, so hikers and runners share the path with bikers coming downhill.
