Blueberry Knoll

The feel

The trail begins on the Pioneer Loop ski trail, meanders through the woods, crosses the base of Government Peak and then climbs steadily. The forest is birch, spruce and cottonwood, with plenty of low blueberry bushes along the way.

The last stretch is a short steep embankment up to a picnic table at the top of the knoll. From there the view stretches across the Knik River Valley and Palmer Flats to the northern flank of the Chugach Mountains.

Mingo says

Pick late summer for the berries, and wear long pants because that is also nettle season. Open all year means you can walk it outside berry season too.

Before you go

  • Buy a $5 day pass at the trailhead, or bring an annual pass.
  • Wear long pants against the nettles.
  • Leash your dog.
