Sheep Mountain Lodge

The feel

Sheep Mountain Lodge stands at Milepost 113.5 on the Glenn Highway, halfway between Palmer and Glennallen. It began in 1942 as a one-room inn for trappers and workers along the highway. A 13-room log lodge followed in 1946, burned in 1958 and was rebuilt, and today's building is a string of additions onto the original bunkhouse, the way many Alaska roadhouses grew.

Decks, greenhouses and flower gardens wrap the lodge, and a telescope lets you watch Dall sheep on the mountainside. Inside, two photographs of the original lodge hang in the restaurant, which serves fresh caught Alaskan salmon and hand-crafted burgers with local beer and wine.

Crowds and best time

The restaurant is open daily from 5/15 to 9/13, 7:30AM to 9PM, and takes no reservations.

Fees and passes

Cabins run $169 to $239 for classic, $229 to $289 for premier and $99 to $119 for guesthouse rooms with shared bath, depending on season, plus tax. The lodge hot tub is included in the room rate.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome on the patio. Some rooms are pet friendly for $15 a pet.

Season and access

Cabins are available 365 days a year. Cell service is poor, but the cabins and the lodge have free wi-fi.

Mingo says

Stop in the restaurant season, mid-May through mid-September, and sit on the patio if you have your dog along. The cabins stay open all year, so a winter stop works too.

Before you go

• Call (907) 745-5121 to book a room, and call ahead if you are bringing a pet.
• Walk in without a reservation for a meal, since the restaurant takes none.
• Count on poor cell service and use the free wi-fi in the cabins or the lodge.
