Seafarer's Memorial

The feel

A six-sided concrete pillared structure, 15 feet tall and 20 feet wide, stands roadside on the Homer Spit under a three-tiered copper-shingled dome. Inside it a seven-foot tall bronze mariner prepares to throw his dock line.

Around 70 names, with their vessels and dates, are engraved on brass plaques inside the pillars, dating from 1934. Outside there are flower beds, a picnic area and a separate brass bell. A bronze plaque on a pedestal seaward of the memorial carries a poem about the sea written by Ryan Bundy in 1996.

Crowds and best time

The annual Blessing of the Fleet is held here in May, in the early evening.

Roadside on the Homer Spit, along the main Spit road, at 4535 Homer Spit Rd. Pullouts and public parking line the Spit.

Open roadside on the Spit. The Blessing of the Fleet is held each May.

Come in May if you can, when boats gather offshore. The names of those lost are read aloud and a bell is rung for each.
