Russian Lakes Trailhead (Russian River Falls)

The feel

The trail starts inside the Russian River Campground and crosses mixed spruce-birch woods on its way to the falls. Open areas might offer a view of moose, and The trail is about 2.3 to 2.4 miles and wheelchair accessible.

It ends at two decks on the riverside cliffs above the stairstep falls. The pools below swarm with sockeye salmon, and you can watch them try to leap the falls. Brown and black bears sometimes appear on the river to scoop salmon. This is the most popular trail on the Chugach National Forest, and use is very heavy as far as the falls.

Crowds and best time

Use is very heavy as far as the falls. The sockeye are thickest in late June.

Parking

Turn south into Russian River Campground off the Sterling Highway at mile 52 to 52.6. The paved trailhead lot is one mile past the campground entrance. Overflow parking is available.

Fees and passes

$14 per vehicle at the trailhead. Overflow is $5 for 12 hours or $10 for 24 hours. There is no vehicle fee for Russian Lakes Trail cabin permit holders.

Hazards

Bears have the right of way, and many bears here associate people with food and are particularly bold. Hike only in daylight and in a group, and stay on the trail.

The campground has water and vault toilets.

Season and access

The campground runs with full service from May through September. Winter parking is at the campground entrance station.

Mingo says

Aim for late June, when thousands of sockeye swarm the pools. Fall is another strong season, with some of the best wildlife viewing of the year.

Before you go

• Bring $14 for the trailhead lot, or park in overflow for $5 or $10.
• Walk in a group and in daylight.
• Confirm the current fee before you drive out.
