K'Beq' Cultural Heritage Interpretive Site

The feel

K'beq' means "footprints." The Kenaitze Indian Tribe runs the site in partnership with the Chugach National Forest, tucked beneath a canopy of trees along the upper stretches of the Kenai River. A boardwalk wraps around a prehistoric Dena'ina house foundation, with interpretive signs and the historic Darien-Lindgren cabin.

Tribal members and staff host interpretive walks and cultural presentations throughout the summer, and the tours cover the house site and the traditional uses of local plants. The forest is mixed white spruce, birch and cottonwood. Bald eagles nest in the cottonwoods across the river, and moose are sometimes seen in the parking lot feeding on willows and alders.

Parking

Mile 52.6 Sterling Highway, across from the Russian River Campground entrance. A short paved spur, K'Beq Road, leads to the site's own lot.

Fees and passes

Admission is free.

Season and access

Open in summer, from June to September. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; confirm before you drive.

Plan a weekday visit in summer, since the site is closed the rest of the year. Time it for a Friday if you want a presentation.

Before you go

• Call the Kenaitze Indian Tribe at 907-335-7652 to confirm hours and the presentation schedule.
• The site was closed from 2019 until it reopened in 2024.
• Turn off the Sterling Highway at Mile 52.6, opposite the Russian River Campground entrance.
