Valdez / Allison Point (saltwater)

The feel

Allison Point is shore access along the Richardson Highway, and you do not need a boat. Hatchery silvers and pinks pour past, and shore anglers cast for them with bank, jig and bait methods. Pink salmon arrive in Valdez Bay in mid-June, peak around July 4 and stay catchable into August.

Silvers come in later than pinks. As the run nears shore they can be caught from the bank at Allison Point and near the small boat harbor. Early in the run a boat is usually needed. Halibut and rockfish charters run the Sound out of the Valdez harbor. Crowds run medium.

Species and timing

Coho July and August at 6 to 12 lb. Pink July and August at 3 to 5 lb. Halibut May to August at 15 to 80 lb. Rockfish and lingcod are also listed.

A federal halibut stamp is required for saltwater trips offshore. Halibut and rockfish have their own rules.
