Minto Lakes

The feel

Minto Lakes lie in the Minto Flats wetland complex, about 31 miles west of Fairbanks in the Tanana River drainage. Marshes and lakes are tied together by sloughs and five rivers: Goldstream Creek and the Chatanika, Tatalina, Tolovana and Tanana rivers.

Northern pike spend the summer feeding in Minto Lakes and nearby rivers, and sheefish gather at river confluences. Reaching the lakes takes a boat and a rough road.

What to expect

Water and access

Wetland lakes reached by boat. From the Murphy Dome Road Extension, about 25 miles west of Fairbanks, launch a jet boat into the Chatanika River after 12 miles of unmaintained, rough dirt road, then run downriver to Goldstream Creek and up it to the lakes. You can also launch a prop or jet boat into the Tolovana River at the village of Minto, off the Elliott Highway.

Plan your trip between June and October, when pike feed here. After wet weather, expect the road to be harder.

Before you go

• Bring a high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle, with chains in wet weather.
• From Minto, the Chatanika joins the Tolovana about 10 miles upstream, Goldstream Creek is another 25 miles up the Chatanika, and the lakes are 5 miles up that creek.
• Carry everything you need, since access points have no campgrounds or picnic areas.
