Minto Flats

The feel

Minto Flats is a large wetland complex approximately 35 miles west of Fairbanks, inside the Minto Flats State Game Refuge. Large and small lakes drain through sloughs and Goldstream Creek into the Tolovana River, and the Chatanika River runs through it too.

The flats are known for a large population of northern pike. In summer you reach them only by boat or floatplane, so this is a trip for a jet boat or prop boat, after a rough dirt road to the launch.

What to expect

Water and access

Take the Murphy Dome Road Extension, approximately 25 miles west of Fairbanks, then 12 miles of unmaintained, rough dirt road to launch a jet boat into the Chatanika River. Run downriver to Goldstream Creek, then up the creek. You can also launch a prop or jet boat into the Tolovana River at the Village of Minto, off the Elliott Highway.

Northern pike, June through October.

Hazards

The road down to the Chatanika River and the launch both require high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles. The boat launch may require chains during wet weather.

June through October. Summer access is by boat or floatplane only.
