Devils Pass Cabin

Moose Pass

The feel

Devils Pass Cabin is a 16 x 16-foot log cabin in an alpine valley, closely surrounded by mountains and not far from Devil's Pass Lake. It stands at the junction of the Resurrection Pass Trail and Devil's Creek Trail, one of the cabins strung along the 38 miles of the Resurrection Pass Trail.

It is a long way in. The cabin is 10 miles via Devil's Creek Trail, 17 miles from the Resurrection Pass South Trailhead and 22 miles from the North Trailhead. Fishing in nearby lakes and creeks is possible, though each needs a hike.

What to expect

Layout and setting
Bunk space for six, with a maximum occupancy of eight. It has a table, oil stove and outhouse, and no wood stove.
Check-in and stay
Check-in and check-out are at 12 p.m.
Parking and rig size
Parking is at the trailhead.
Fees and reservations
$75/night plus a non-refundable Recreation.gov service fee. Reserve up to 180 days in advance.
Hazards
Devil's Creek Trail passes through a hazardous avalanche zone. Winter storms and whiteouts are frequent above tree line, and the trail may be icy.
Bathrooms and water
No potable water at the cabin. Water is in Juneau Creek, and surface water needs 5 minutes of boiling before drinking. An outhouse stands at the cabin.
Season and access
Open year-round. Winter travel on Devil's Creek Trail is not recommended past mile 3; winter access is via the Resurrection Pass Trail. The Resurrection Pass Trail is closed to motorized vehicles May 1 to November 30 and to pack and saddle stock April 1 to June 30.

Mingo says

Choose a settled weather window, since whiteouts can close in above tree line. Plan a trip that fits the 10-mile Devil's Creek approach or the 22-mile route from the north.

Before you go

  • Bring #1 stove oil, since the cabin has an oil stove; one gallon lasts about 10 hours.
  • Call the Seward Ranger District at (907) 288-3178 for trail conditions.
  • Reserve at Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777.
