Rae-Wallace Mine Trail

The feel

The trail climbs from the Independence Mine area up tundra slopes toward Rae-Wallace Peak. The ground is alpine tundra and rocky terrain, with mountain views and seasonal wildflowers.

It starts at 3073 ft and tops out at 3973 ft, so you are already high when you leave the car. The lower section can be muddy or icy early in the season.

What to expect

Time
About 1.5 hours.
Parking
Park in the seasonal lot at Independence Mine, mile 17.3 on Hatchers Pass Road. The upper lot gate is open 9am to 7pm daily; outside those hours, park at the lower lot and walk up.
Fees and passes
$5 day use; a state park pass is accepted.
Dogs
Allowed.
Hazards
Hatcher Pass is an avalanche hazard area, weather can change unexpectedly, and hypothermia is a risk. Muddy or icy lower section early in the season.
Bathrooms and water
Toilets and water at Independence Mine State Historical Park.
Season and access
Hike between June and August. The roads close in winter, and Hatcher Pass Road is typically open between July and September depending on snow depth. The Palmer-Fishhook Road is paved until mile 17.5, then rough, narrow, steep gravel not recommended for RVs, trailers and large vehicles.

Mingo says

Aim for June through August, once the road is open and the wildflowers are out. Check the snow depth before you drive up.

Before you go

  • Bring $5 for day use, or your state park pass.
  • Tell someone where you are going before you leave.
  • Leave RVs and trailers at home, since the gravel past mile 17.5 is not recommended for them.
