The feel

This is the steepest, shortest way onto Kesugi Ridge: 1800 feet of climbing in 2 miles, straight up from Byers Lake Campground. The trail ascends steeply past a tumbling waterfall and onto the ridge crest, and it is filled with roots that get slick when wet.

Two miles of climbing brings you above treeline to K'esugi Ridge. The bald ridge opens to panoramic views of snow-clad mountains that are 35 miles away, and Tarn Point, a popular viewpoint, lies a mile west of the trail junction.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 4 miles total, with 1800 ft of gain. A steep, difficult, rooty climb past a waterfall to the ridge crest.

Time

About 3 hours to reach the point above treeline.

Dogs

Leashed in the parking lot and under voice control on the trail.

Hazards

Roots that get slick when wet. Weather on the ridge can change fast and low clouds can move in. Some trails close seasonally for high bear concentrations.

Choose a clear day, because the payoff is the view from the ridge. Skip it when the roots are wet.

Before you go

• Carry proper clothing and navigation tools in case low clouds move in.
