Ermine Hill Trail

The feel

The trail starts in forest at the roadside lot and drops into the Byers Creek valley over boardwalks and a footbridge. About one mile in, the climb begins, and five large switchbacks follow a footbridge over Giardia Creek. The path is somewhat overgrown and only moderately maintained, so devil's club and downed trees may need navigating.

Higher up, the trail passes an elongated alpine pond, and the junction with the K'esugi Ridge Trail lies just beyond it. It ends above the tree line, looking down on multiple drainages, with Alaska Range and Denali views. This is the middle of the ridge's three main day access trails.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 7.4 miles total, with 1300 to 1886 ft of gain. Forest, boardwalks and five large switchbacks lead up to an alpine pond and the ridge junction. Rated moderate.

Time

About 4 hours; roughly 2 hours gets you above treeline.

Parking

A roadside lot at milepost 157 on the George Parks Highway, 42 miles north of Trapper Creek. Spaces are limited and large RVs may not fit.

Dogs

Leashed in the parking lot and under voice control on the trail.

Hazards

Weather on the ridge can change fast and low clouds can move in. Overgrown stretches with devil's club and downed trees. Some trails close seasonally for high bear concentrations.

Bathrooms and water

A small outhouse near the trailhead is the only amenity.

Plan on late May through early October. Expect about 2 hours to get above treeline, so start with that much daylight in hand.

• Carry proper clothing and navigation tools in case low clouds move in.
• Check for seasonal closures before you drive; some trails close for high bear concentrations.
